I have a confession to make!

April 14th, 2008 by Michelle

I have a new hobby. It is so all-consuming that I’ve barely scrapped or designed since discovering it. I can’t hide it anymore because I’ve designed a new kit around it and so it’s public now. LOL!

Ready for it? You have to promise not to laugh! Anybody who laughs is hereby banished from this blog!

Ok . .. here goes . . .

Hi. My name is Michelle and I am addicted to dolls. :(

Yep. I’ve started collecting dolls. Blythe dolls to be exact :) I didn’t even know what a Blythe doll was until the first few weeks of February when somebody posted a thread about them at DST/MSA. I took one look and I was hooked! I have fallen hard and fast folks. HARD and FAST! It hasn’t even been 2 months and I already have 5 dolls sitting on my shelf with 4 more on the way in the mail! And these things are not cheap!!! I’m embarassed to admit how much money I’ve spent on them . . . But I can’t help it! They are so darn FUN!!!

In case you don’t know what the heck I’m talking about, here’s a quick rundown: Blythe dolls were first introduced in 1972. They were not popular with kids. Apparently the big heads and big eyes were scary :) So production ended that year and that was it! Flash forward to 1997. A photographer by the name of Gina Garan is given an old vintage Blythe doll. She takes pictures of it. Interest is renewed in the doll. A company in Japan starts making the doll again and people (mainly grownups!) go crazy for them. That’s the story of Blythe in a nutshell!

Anyway, the reason I am finally coming clean with this on the blog is because my newest kit I put in the shop last night was inspired by my newest doll! Check it out!

It’ll be on sale for 25% for the first week :)

Isn’t she cute!?!? I haven’t received her yet. She’s on her way in the mail. I can’t wait! If you want to check out the rest of my plastic family, you can visit my Flickr page.

So this is why the blog has been so quiet lately :D I haven’t had much to talk about other than dolls lately LOL!

So tell me . . .anybody reading this happen to collect Blythe’s too? Did you have one when you were little? Do you have an original 1972 Kenner Blythe packed away in your attic you’d like to sell me? (ha ha! i had to at least ask :))

I’ll leave you with a fun youtube video of the original commercial from 1972:

Congratulations on your first (five) Blythe doll(s). Just wait - next you’re going to just NEED to have a Kenner!

I currently have 12 Neo Blythes, two Kenners, and a bunch of other dolls.

I think I need a Blythe Addict Anonymous meeting!!

  3. Melinda Says:

Ok, I’ve wasted way too much time checking out all of your dolls and watching commercials LOL They are cute! I wish I had picture subjects that were that cooperative :) love the new kit too!

  4. Brittany Says:

Michelle! LOL, you’re hilarious! I can’t click on any of the links because I can barely afford gas, let alone a new obsession. I’m glad to hear you’re having fun, though!! :)

  5. shelly Says:

Congrats on your new obsession! It’s really hard to stop once started LOL! Snail is adorable, what is her stock originally? I used to have as many as 23 (all Neos though) until ‘06, but I’ve put some girls up for adoption and are now left with 11. I don’t ‘play’ with them now, but I do like to take them out of the closet now and then to change and look at them ;) Have fun with your girls!

  6. Rikki Says:

I’ve never heard of Blythe, and I’m not a doll lover either. And I thing they look a bit scary out of some Japanese horror movie, LOL. But they certainly make good models for scrapbook pages. I love every single page you’ve made so far.
